State-of-the-art Diagnostic and Treatment Tools for TMJ
Dr. Goldman uses a number of innovative technologies
to accurately assess and treat TMJ and the severe pain it
causes. Over the years, he has even developed several highly
effective techniques and instruments himself in an effort
to better serve patients. The technologies available at the
Head and Neck Pain Center include:
State-of-the-art
radiographic Imaging – The CommCat®
head and neck tomographic unit is used to acquire a full range
of distortion- and smear-free images of the temporomandibular
joint. This equipment uses a very small fraction of the radiation
used by a typical CAT scan.
Computerized Diagnostic Instrumentation
– Bio-research® computerized
diagnostic technology is many times used as part of a comprehensive
evaluation. This equipment includes:
Electromyograph (EMG) – Measures
the electrical activity of various sets of muscles both
at rest and during simple functional tasks. This information
helps Dr. Goldman evaluate the muscular component of the
TMJ problem.
Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) –
Records and analyzes the noises emanating from the Temporomandibular
joints as the patient performs various jaw movements.
The quality, amplitude and timing of these sounds are important
factors in determining problems that occur within the joints.
Electrognathography (EGN) – Tracks
the lower jaw in 3-D in order to assess abnormal jaw pathways,
as well as acceleration and deceleration discrepancies when
the mouth rapidly opens and closes. By combining EGN and
JVA, Dr. Goldman can determine the exact point at which
abnormal noises within the jaw joint occur.
